Bills fail with response to Matt Araiza allegations, lawyer says & More Latest News Here

A lawyer for the woman who says rookie NFL punter Matt Araiza raped her last year when she was 17 blasted the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, even after the team released Araiza.

“The Buffalo Bills had no choice but to cut their young punter after they botched their response to our request so badly: they ignored us, as if what I warned them could be avoided if they kept the head in the sand,” he added. attorney Dan Gilleon said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. “That’s what enablers do.”

“My client’s life was forever marked in October 2021,” Gilleon added, referring to the Halloween party in San Diego where the now 18-year-old woman, then 21-year-old Araiza, said. assaulted her in a gang rape, “but she behaved with grace and dignity. Not once did she express to me a desire to hurt her attackers out of revenge or hatred. She never asked for a pound of flesh. Her only request was the kind of justice that could save other young women from the hell she has been through.

Araiza, an All-American at San Diego State last year who was nicknamed “Punt God,” was drafted by the Bills in the sixth round. He won the starting job on Monday, but on Thursday the woman’s attorney filed a civil lawsuit in San Diego County Superior Court that included detailed rape allegations and two days later he was out of a job.

“Matt is very disappointed that his career with the Bills ended not because he played poorly, but because of false allegations made against him by a young woman and her attorney,” attorney Kerry Armstrong said. who represents Araiza, in a statement. at USA TODAY Sports. “I hope he’s back in the NFL soon. He deserves to be, because he’s the hardest working (22) I know. ”

Armstrong drew scathing criticism from the woman’s attorney.

“When she allowed me to contact Matt Araiza and the other defendants, she made it clear that money was not her goal,” Gilleon said. “She never asked Matt Araiza for a penny. Mr. Araiza’s lawyer knew that. He knew he had offered us money to settle the case and that we had rejected the offer. Yet , Mr. Araiza’s legal counsel had the audacity to go on a vile, brainless TV tour to defame my client as a “shakedown” artist and “money hoarder”.

“Think about this. Mr. Araiza’s legal agent knew that a 17-year-old girl had left a room where Matt Araiza was also present, covered in blood and bruises and crying that she had been raped. Yet , he fell so low that he was ready to call this 17-year-old girl an opportunistic con artist.

“It was totally inhumane and incredibly stupid. If Matt Araiza had shown 1% of my client’s grace, perhaps by apologizing and donating his money to a charity serving rape victims, he would be always a Buffalo Bill and his parents could sit in the stands and look at their son with pride.Instead, he decided to hire a lawyer who only knew how to violently attack the young woman his client had raped. Now, Mr. Araiza’s life is also forever scarred, perhaps it was his self-inflicted justice.

In a statement Thursday, the Bills said they “recently became aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021. Due to the seriousness of the complaint, we have conducted a thorough review of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil matter, we will have no further comment at this stage.

But on Friday the Bills held Araiza out of the final preseason game and on Saturday the team released him.

“The last 48 hours have been very difficult, for a lot of people. It’s been very difficult,” Bills general manager Brandon Beane said at a press conference on Saturday. “We sympathize with this whole situation, all parties involved. This young lady, what she’s been through. You feel really bad for this whole situation. At the end of the day, this is a legal situation – we don’t know all the facts. C that’s what makes it difficult.

“But right now we just think it’s the best decision for everyone to leave Matt and let him deal with this situation and focus on that, so we’re going to part ways there.”

The Bills’ release of Araiza won no praise from Gilleon, who in an earlier interview with USA TODAY Sports said the Bills had not spoken to the woman and said, “They didn’t of investigation. I mean, you can’t investigate if you don’t even ask the main witness what happened.

Lawyer:Bills never spoke to the woman who accused Matt Araiza of rape

Nancy Armor:Don’t buy Bills’ claim of ‘thorough review’ of rape allegations against Matt Araiza

The alleged incident took place Oct. 16 and 17 at an off-campus party near the state of San Diego where Araiza lived, according to the lawsuit.

The woman said Araiza, who was 21 at the time, gave her a drink which she said “contained not only alcohol but other intoxicants”, although she said that she was in high school, according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit says Araiza took the drunk teenager to the side of the house and told her to perform oral sex on him before he ‘pulled her off the floor, turned her around to face the party’ and enter her from behind.

Then, the woman said, Araiza took her to a room where her teammates took turns raping her for an hour and a half, according to the lawsuit. The woman also said she was raped by two other soccer players, Zavier Leonard and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko. Both are no longer on the San Diego State list.

The woman said she lost consciousness during the sexual assault, according to the lawsuit.

In the lawsuit, the woman is listed as Jane Doe and USA TODAY’s policy is not to identify individuals who were allegedly sexually assaulted.

Gilleon said the Bills never spoke to his client and called the team largely unresponsive to him.

On July 31, Gilleon emailed Bills general counsel Kathryn D’Angelo and said he was representing the woman who accused Araiza of raping her in a gang rape. , according to a copy of the email obtained by USA TODAY Sports.

Gilleon said he spoke to D’Angelo by phone the next day.

“I had a conversation with (D’Angelo),” Gilleon said. “Prolonged conversation. She didn’t ask too many questions. I just talked a lot.

“She said she would get back to me and she never did. And then I emailed her saying, ‘Hey, two weeks ago you told me you would get back to me.’ You didn’t. And still no response.”

Derek Boyko, vice president of communications for the Bills, did not immediately respond to a USA TODAY Sports request for comment by phone.
