How to play your own music on Apple Music

Apple Music is a great way to listen to music on Apple and Android devices, and it offers a wide range of songs. But what if the songs you love the most are not available on Apple Music?

Songs stored on your computer can be added to your Apple Music library. We’ll walk you through how to add your music to Apple Music from Mac or Windows.

What you need to know before you start

Importing your music is probably an Apple Music feature you probably didn’t know about. However, you will need a few things before adding your music to your Apple Music library. If you have a Windows PC, you will need to download iTunes from Apple official site and install it. If you are a Mac user, Apple Music is preinstalled on your Mac. Otherwise, you can download it from the App Store.

You should have your music files in MP3 and M4A format. You can convert your FLAC files to MP3 if you need.

Once everything is ready, you are ready to start importing your music to Apple Music. The process is similar mostly on Mac and Windows, and only a few options differ.

How to Import Your Songs to Apple Music on Mac

Importing your files into Apple Music is easier than you think. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Open Apple Music.
  2. Select Case from the menu bar.
  3. Click on Import in the drop-down menu.

You can also drag and drop the music files into the Apple Music app window to import them.

When done, it will import the selected music files to your Apple Music library. You can find your songs in the Recently Added or Artists section.

How to Import Your Songs to iTunes on Windows

Since Apple Music is not available on Windows, iTunes is your only option to import your music. Follow these instructions to do so:

    1. Open itunes on your PC.
    2. Select Case from the menu bar in the upper left corner of the window.
    3. Click on Add file to library Where Add Folder to Library from the drop-down menu depending on what you want to import.

Then iTunes will import the files to your iTunes library. You can access it by going to the Library and selecting the Recently Added or Artists tab, similar to Apple Music on Mac.

Note that you will only be able to download MP3 and M4A files on Mac and Windows, not FLAC or WMV formats. Also, it is worth mentioning that no one will have access to the music you downloaded, and only you will be able to access it only.

Again, Apple Music does not upload it to the cloud but creates a copy of your music files in the Home > Music > Music > Media > Music folder, leaving the original files in their current location.

You can choose to delete the original files, but make sure you don’t delete or move the copied files from their location or you won’t be able to play your songs.

Listen to your favorite songs on Apple Music

Apple Music gives you access to a lot of songs, but you might miss some of the old classics you had before. However, using this method may add them to your Apple Music library.

There’s no way to sync them across your iCloud devices, so you can’t expect them to be available on your other devices. Also, if you have old songs on your old iPod, you can transfer them to your iPhone or computer.
