Medical marijuana companies continue their growth and distribution process in Fort Pierre

The state has approved licenses for two medical marijuana dispensaries in Fort Pierre, and paperwork for a third is underway.

City finance officer Roxanne Heezen said Bad River Cannabis and Black Hills Cannabis Care have both been approved.

Bad River Cannabis opened its dispensary and cultivation site on Sale Barn Road in Fort Pierre last month (April 20, 2022). They hope to start construction this month.

Heezen says Black Hills Cannabis Care — which will only be a dispensary — is still working through the city’s licensing process.

Heezen expects to see state approval for the third dispensary and cultivation facility in the near future.

In South Dakota, cities determine the rules for medical marijuana dispensaries, but the actual business licenses for them come from the state.

South Dakota voters approved the legalization of medical marijuana in the November 2020 ballot. The state worked out the details and provided updates on the https://medcannabis.sd.gov/ website.
