#MusicExchange: In the void (by Charlie)

Charl van Blerk, aka Charlie Void, is immensely talented and wears many creative hats. You could say he’s adept at dance politics.

On the one hand, he sits on the Western Cape Cultural Commission and on the other hand as artist Charlie Void, who has a deep love for disco-influenced songs and is inspired by Diana Ross and Troye Sivan.

On one of his previous singles titled Sniff he even made fun of Lindsay Lohan.

His latest work, Downtown came out a few weeks ago.

I caught up with Charlie last week…

What is your job description?

It’s not a simple answer. I’m the CEO of a tech company, called ParkShare, I run a local charity called The Turn Around Project, and of course I sit on the Western Cape Government’s Cultural Committee and sing as Charlie Void.

What does music represent for you?

Music was the first thing I could emotionally lean on for support. I have found purpose in creation and it remains the ultimate form of self-expression. Even if you’re not a creator, you can find personal meaning in music you’ve never written.

My music is about…

I grew up in the early 2000s and I grew up with the hits of the 80s. I think the music industry doesn’t have that glam-pop, synth sound that it used to have.

Where are the unforgettable corny melodies? That’s what I try to do with my music. I try to do simple dance hits.

What is your motto?

Value your time in the world. Money is replaceable, but time is up.


Takes many different forms, but I can tell you what it means to me personally. Fame is the recognition of your work. It’s the industry marker for “I must have done something right!”

Retirement will come when…

I’ve always been a busy person and someone who enjoys working on projects, so I don’t think I’ll ever retire.

Where do you look for inspiration to create?

Inspiration always knocks in the car for me. So, I guess I’ll go wherever four wheels take me!

What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job?

I find it so striking when I meet a fan and see the impact I had on him. I still feel so shocked that I was able to elicit such powerful emotions in someone.

From a musical point of view, I would say Lady Gaga! No one else combines art, fashion, technology and music in the same way!

Which living person do you most admire and why?

Chris Jenner. Anyone who can’t turn anything into a billion dollar brand has my respect.

What is your most valuable asset?

My orthopedic pillow… I’m an old man, I know…

Others do not decide your value or validity. Only you decide.

What has been your favorite trip so far?

This may sound silly and childish. but i like taking the train to go anywhere just for fun.

Do you do charity work, and if you do, what do you do?

I lead the Turn Around project which aims to help communities in the Cape Flats area of ​​Cape Town organize a network of accredited neighborhood watches, creating a safer community, while empowering residents by educating them on how to make full use of the resources, made available by the City of Cape Town, to serve the community.

Wishes and dreams?

I want to be happy and at peace. My dreams are to never be ordinary or to have an ordinary life. To always have an adventure in life!
